المهندس المعماري قحطان المدفعي .
ولد المعماري والفنان التشكيلي قحطان المدفعي في منطقة الأعظمية ببغداد عام 1927،حيث نشأ و أكمل دراسته الأولية فيها، عاش طفولته وصباه في بيئة فنية متميزة،
اختط لحياته ان يكون معماريا ، فدرس الهندسة في انكلترا ، و عاد منها ليصبح مدرسا في كلية الهندسة ببغداد عام 1952 بعد ان قام بتاسيس القسم المعماري فيها ، وقد زامله في فترة دراسته هذه في لندن الفنان جواد سليم الذي ذهب لدراسة الفن هناك ايضا، ولشدة ولعه بالعلم والمعرفة ، فلقد واصل دراسته العليا في انكلترا عام 1980 ليحصل بعدها على شهادة الدكتوراه.
اهم تصاميمه المعمارية هي : مبنى جمعية التشكيليين العراقيين ( حيث يعد احد مؤسسيها و المشارك في معظم معارضها) ; استوحى تصميم شكلها الخارجي من شكل الخيام في الصحراء، كذلك تصميم جامع بيت بنية في منطقة العلاوي; ان هذا التصميم يمكن ادراجه ضمن افكار النظرية النسبية لأسباب عديدة منها رفض السطوح المستوية بزاوية 90 درجة ، واستخدام مفهوم القوس المتحرك ، ليظهرلنا الشكل متناسبا و معبرا عن العمل في رؤية كلية شاملة، عكس في هذا العمل اهتمامه و دراسته للتاريخ بطريقة ذكية ، فأستخدم مادة السيراميك ذات البعد التاريخي كنتيجة في الإستفادة من خبرات البابليين في الإكساء بهذه المادة، ليحصل بذلك على مفهوم الاستمرارية التاريخية ببعد نظري خاص .
ومن تصاميمه المهمة الأخرى ، فقد قام بتصميم نصب و منتزه الرابع عشر من تموز في منطقة الكاظمية ، مدينة الألعاب في جانب الرصافة قرب قناة الجيش والتي استحضر فيها فكرة الإحتضان،، متحف التاريخ الطبيعي، بناية وزارة المالية المحاذية لخط محمد القاسم السريع في منطقة الوزيرية، مبنى نقابة المهندسين الزراعيين في المنصور ، إضافة الى اكثر من ثلاثمئة مبنى و دار ، منها دار التشكيلي والطبيب والرياضي نوري مصطفى بهجت في حي المنصور ، و بيت الفنان فائق حسن في منطقة الصليخ.
وقد اقام معرضه الشخصي الاول على قاعة دجلة ببغداد عام 2001 ابهر فيه الوسط الفني والثقافي ، عرض فيه العديد من رسوماته و لوحاته التي انتجها على مدى عقود بعد ان كان ينتظر إقامة معرض شامل لأعماله الفنية والمعمارية .
ان تجربة المدفعي فاقت الإبداع ، بعد ان عكست نتاجات متميزة بفكر حداثوي يتماشى مع التغير الجديد في نظرة العالم، فكان ينحو الى التجريد والحداثة في اعماله الفنية ، و اعطى لنفسه تميزا خاصا عن بقية رواد العمارة الآخرين بصفة خاصة ، وذلك لإلتزامه فكريا بمنهج نظري حول الرؤية الكونية الجديدة.
لقد استطاع ان ينفذ افكاره باسلوب تميز بالتجديد والتجريد والتركيز على ديناميكية الأشياء، وهذه هي نظرته للكون التي اعتمدها في تصاميمه واعماله، مع تركيزه على مفهوم الحركة في العمارة والتي نجدها حاضرة كبعد فكري في الاشكال التي استخدمها منذ بداية الستينات،، فمفهوم الوظيفة والحركة عنصران متلازمان في اعماله التي تنبع من فكره المتأصل في التراث و حبه لبلده العراق، لذا نجد ان من الواضح استقصاء منبع افكاره المعمارية من ثقافته الواسعة و مطالعاته و تحليلاته للفكر الفلسفي في الحاضر و الحضارات العراقية القديمة من جذور هذا البلد، إضافة الى عشقه للفكر والحوار والموسيقى والأفكار الفلسفية وبالنظريات المعمارية التي جعلت منه خلاقا في افكاره.
